Becky Linden emailed pitches the week before the event
Hi! This is Becky Linden, Director (Pitch) of the MIT Cross Products. We are really excited that you have decided to join us here at MIT for the Gospel Jelly, and are looking forward to your arrival this Friday!
We have sent you a packet through snail mail with the following information and more, however, we wanted to send this email as a precaution, to ensure you could get as much as you could as soon as possible.
You should find the following items in this email:
- Contact information
- Housing assignments form (required action)
- Checklist of things to bring
- Payment information
- Directions to MIT (map is included in the snail mail packet)
- Gospel Jelly schedule
- Overview of the weekend
- Short descriptions of talks/breakouts
In addition to the housing list stuff, discussed next, we would like you to email us a list of names of the people attending from your group and a paragraph about your group to be used as your intro for the concert. Thanks!
Again, we are really looking forward to your presence here, and hope that you are excited about the Jelly and are ready to work on making your group as effective as it can be. Please pray not only that the operation of the Jelly will be smooth, but also that your group will be open and prepared to allow the Lord to work in you throughout the weekend!

Housing list
We wanted to give you the opportunity to make your own housing assignments, since you know the dynamics of your own group, and how best to group people together to achieve any goals you may have. For example, you may want to group people together who don't yet know each other very well to give them an opportunity to bond.
The following are the housing slots that have been designated for your group. What you need to do before you arrive at the Jelly is place each of your people with a host. Write their name in the slot provided, making sure the gender of the person and the host match. We will need this list when you arrive, so that we can provide your members with the folders that will have their host information on it. If there are problems with this list, please call 617-555-1434 (Derek & Becky Linden).
Format: Dorm name, Room #, Last name, First name, Phone, username, Gender, Number of people, slots for name(s) of person(s) who are staying with host (just a fake example here) Next 123 Doe Jane 5-8123 jdoe F 2 Next 456 Kim Sally 5-8456 skim F 2 Next 789 Cool Joe 5-8789 jcool M 2

Checklist of Things to Bring
For the Group:
- One dictionary for Saturday (I'm serious :)
- Your group's housing arrangements (filled out, both copies)
- Our contact information
- The directions to MIT and the map of MIT's east campus (one set per car at least)
- A single check (or as few as possible), payable to Derek Linden,
- to cover your group's entire registration of $16/person attending.
- We will need payment when you register.
For Each Member:
- Sleeping bag, pillow, clothes, toiletries, alarm clock. . .the standard stuff
- Bible
- Writing implements
- A notebook
- Music for your set (if you need it :)
- Concert clothes
Payment Instructions
The cost for the entire weekend is $16 for each person attending. At least $12 of that will cover food for 5 meals and 4 refreshment times. The remainder is going towards a speaker fee and reproduction costs.
We would prefer a single check per group that will cover the total cost of all of its members. If you can't swing the whole amount in one check, we will take a few of them from your group. However, we will need to have the entire amount covered when you register.
Make checks payable to Derek Linden.
Please remember that we cannot accept cash payments. Basically, if there is cash changing hands, we as a student group need to hire a campus policeman to be on guard.
Directions to MIT
By Car from Route I-93 (Southeast Expressway)
Take Exit 26, and follow the sign to Back Bay/Storrow Drive (don't take the Somerville/Cambridge exit). Soon after you get on Storrow Dr. you will come to a sudden Y in the road, one side leading to Government Center and the other to Storrow Dr. West. Take the right fork to stay on Storrow Drive. Pass the exit for Copley/Back Bay. Take the next exit to Cambridge/Route 2A North, on the left. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto Massachusetts Ave. As you cross the bridge over the Charles River, you will be looking at MIT. Cross Memorial Dr. just as you leave the bridge, go through two lights, one at a "T-type" intersection at Amherst St., and one at a crosswalk (MIT's main entrance). Take a right at the next light onto Vassar St. Go to the end of the street, which is at the next light. There will be 4 options to choose from: a hard right in front of a parking garage, a gentle right, a gentle left, and a very hard left. Take the gentle right onto Main Street. Go straight through the light at Ames St., and through the light at a crosswalk right in front of a T-station. Cross Hayward St., cross Wadsworth St., and then take your next right just after a stop sign into a large parking lot. That is the Sloan lot, and that is where you will park for Friday evening. (Later, you will probably want to drive to where you will be housed, and park closer to that area. Maps of these areas will be provided at registration.)
By Car from Route I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike)
Take the Cambridge/Brighton exit (Exit 18) off of the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90). Following the signs to Cambridge, veer to the right after the toll booth, cross the River Street Bridge, cross Memorial drive just as you leave the bridge, and continue straight about 1 mile to Central Square. There are a couple of lights along the go straight through them. You will also pass many streets, the last two of which are Franklin St. and then Green St. Both of these streets may or may not have signs, and both are easy to miss if you are not looking carefully. If you do miss them, don't worry, they are merely included to help you know if you are on course. After passing these two streets, you will come to Massachusetts Avenue. Massachusetts Ave. is the first really major road you will come to. It is not well marked with signs, but you will know it by the large, brick-covered sidewalks, the T station signs, the somewhat complicated road intersections, and the large "no left turn" sign suspended over the intersection. Turn right onto Mass Ave. Go past Pearl St., Brookline Ave. (which is at a light), a Shell station on your left, a Best station on your right, a Budget rent-a-car on your right, a light at Albany St., and some railroad tracks. Then take a left at the following light onto Vassar St.
By Car from Route I-95, from the North or from the South
If you are approaching MIT from the North, you will come to the junction of I-93 and I-95. Take I-93 South and follow the I-93 directions to MIT as given.
If you approaching MIT from the South, take either I-90 or I-93 (Southeast Expressway) off of I-95, and follow the appropriate directions above. We recommend the I-90 route over the I-93 route to avoid more traffic.
If you arrive on time (i.e., between 6:00 and 7:30pm), someone from the Cross Products will be at the parking lot to meet you. If you are late arriving on Friday, you will have two choices: 1) Call 460-3618 when you get into Boston and/or MIT and someone go out and meet you, or 2) Just show up, park, and find your way to Tang Center (Bldg E51). (Follow the dotted arrow.) If you are arriving Saturday (not encouraged!), call 494-1434 or 460-3618 to make arrangements.

Overview of the Weekend
including Registration and Concert
At registration, one group representative should submit the check (or checks) for the entire group, as well as a copy of the group's housing arrangements (2 copies of the form are included). Each participant will receive a folder containing all the information they will need for the weekend. The representative who registers the group will be given the folders to distribute to the group members.
Friday's talks will focus on the individual, in order to lay a foundation for the group work on Saturday and Sunday. These talks are crucial to gaining the maximum benefit from the weekend, because the information they contain will help each person contribute more productively to the group, as well as develop personally. Special sessions for Pitches will be given on all three days, covering topics like discussion facilitation methods, to ensure as much productive use of time as possible. Specifics on meeting hosts will be provided at registration.
Saturday will consist mainly of short talks and group breakouts. The talks will provide direction for the breakouts. During these breakouts, each group will have a separate room where it can deal with the issues discussed in the talks. If only a small number from your group is attending, don't worry about the group breakout times. We'll combine you with other groups in your situation to make a composite group where you'll be able to go through the process. Working as a composite group will give you experience with the concepts and methods involved, enabling you to take your whole group through the process when you return. Creating a composite group for these breakout times has proven extremely effective in the past.
A concert will follow in the evening to help us refocus on what we do and why we want to work better as groups. Each group's concert set should be around 12-15 minutes, although if you can't fill the time, that's perfectly fine. Everyone should bring everything they will need for the concert with them to breakfast. There will be a lockable room to hold everything for the day, which will be open during meals and unlockable for emergencies at other times of the day. People should not expect to be able to get back into their hosts' rooms until after the concert.
Sunday morning will consist of a worship service, with 2 additional talks and a group breakout, covering followership and conflict resolution. After that, there will be an optional (but highly recommended) 4-hour seminar on group dynamics. Again, people should not expect to be able to get back into their hosts' rooms before they will have to leave. Everyone should pack up all of their belonging and bring everything with them to breakfast. The lockable room will again be available to hold everything for the day, and will be open during meals.
